Learn Real Mandarin for Everyday Conversations
Most Mandarin learners study words and phrases for years but still struggle to hold real conversations. I was exactly the same.
What finally helped me improve was learning through structured lessons, listening practice, speaking practice, and real everyday conversations.
Throughout this website I recommend Rocket Languages because it is genuinely the Mandarin course I believe gives beginners the best structure for learning real conversational Mandarin.

I Studied Mandarin for Years But Still Couldn’t Speak
I spent years trying to learn Mandarin properly.
Apps, YouTube, flashcards, random lessons — I tried all of it. I could recognise words and understand bits and pieces, but when it came time to actually speak, my mind would freeze.
That is the frustrating part nobody talks about.
A lot of Mandarin courses teach vocabulary and grammar, but they do not teach you how to comfortably follow and join real conversations.
What finally helped me improve was consistent listening and speaking practice every day — even if only for a short time.
Instead of jumping between random apps and lessons, I needed one clear path that built confidence step by step.
That is why I recommend Rocket Languages on this website.
It was one of the first courses that made me feel like I was actually learning how people speak in real life instead of just studying for a test.
What I personally liked most was:
✓ Clear lesson structure
✓ Strong focus on listening and speaking
✓ Real conversational Mandarin
✓ Audio lessons that feel natural
✓ Learning at your own pace
If you understand some Mandarin but still struggle to speak confidently, this is the course I recommend.
I’ve tested a lot of methods — this is the one that genuinely helped me improve my spoken Mandarin.
A Better Way to Learn Real Mandarin
Most people spend months memorising vocabulary and grammar rules but still struggle to hold a real conversation.
That was my experience too.
I tried apps, YouTube videos, random lessons, and even tutors. I learned bits and pieces, but speaking naturally still felt difficult.
The biggest change came when I stopped trying to memorise single words and started learning Mandarin the way real people actually speak it.
Here’s what actually works:
✓ Learn complete phrases instead of isolated words
✓ Train your ears to understand real spoken Mandarin
✓ Practise speaking from the beginning
✓ Focus on everyday conversations people actually use
✓ Build consistency with short daily study sessions
✓ Learn how native speakers actually communicate
Rocket Languages was the first course that gave me a clear and structured way to learn Mandarin.
It combines speaking, listening, pronunciation, grammar, and real conversations into one structured system.
It does not magically make you fluent overnight — but if you genuinely want to speak Mandarin properly, it is one of the best programs I have personally used.
My interest in Mandarin began years ago through working alongside Chinese people and spending time in Asia during my Navy years.
China, 1986 — during my time in the Navy.
My Journey Learning Mandarin
I first became interested in Mandarin during my time in the Navy when I travelled extensively throughout the Far East. I visited China, Hong Kong, and Singapore many times, including long periods undertaking maintenance work while based in port in Singapore.
Each deployment to the Far East lasted around six months at a time, and being surrounded by Mandarin speakers sparked my interest in Chinese language and culture.
Over the years I tried apps, classes, YouTube videos, and different learning methods. I could recognise words and phrases, but real conversations still felt difficult.
Even my Chinese girlfriend would joke that after years of learning, I still struggled to hold a simple conversation.
That was the frustrating part. I understood more Mandarin than I could actually speak.
The biggest breakthrough came when I stopped trying to memorise isolated vocabulary and started following a structured system focused on real spoken Mandarin, listening practice, and conversation training.
Instead of jumping randomly between apps and videos, I finally had a clear path to follow. That structured approach completely changed the way I learned and helped me start building real conversational confidence.
